Dear Gina,
My son has been diagnosed ADHD and ADD. I feel like the school is tormenting me and I want to take him out. I’m considering un-schooling. Should I remove him now or wait until the end of the school year? ~Marianne
Dear Marianne,
I’ve worked as a special education educator. It is a tough job. Can you take a step back and reflect on your son’s behavior without considering your “ego”? Could he be having trouble staying on task or easily frustrated? Give him a few simple tasks, with specific expectations and monitor his behavior for yourself.
Rather you determine that their findings are in agreement with the school or not, it would be a great opportunity to change your mindset regarding the matter. Consider an attitude of gratitude. It is a wonderful opportunity for your son to build his interpersonal skills. The objective reality is that the school system and you are working as a team to help him show up as a next generation leader.
Stay calm. Breath. Pause your reactions. And remember how powerful you are at bringing your mission to fruition.
Love,
Gina
